Jesus said to His disciples as he taught on the mountainside in Matthew 6, 7, & 8 - "unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees, you will not see the Kingdom of Heaven." In this entire Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is drawing contrast after contrast between the Kingdom of Heaven and the kingdoms of this earth. After He spoke those words, He began to explain what He means by "exceeding righteousness." He not only calls us to see the difference between His kingdom and the worldly kingdom - - He calls us to live the difference.
